Vivian
Hsu said, "9 years ago the TV show Youth Competition (Qing Cuen Zheng Ba
Zhan) had a competition for pretty teenage girls and I got number 1! The
reward was a moped, I asked for cash replacement and got NT40,000 (a bit
over US$1000). I gave all the money to my mother and she was very happy.
After that I became a member of a girl idol group Shao Nu Duei and started
to participate in many promotional activities. At the time Shao Nu Duei was
not very popular, so we had very little work. In the daytime I helped in my
mother's store.At that time
our family operated a diner specializing in boxed lunches. I often rode my
sister's motorcycle to deliver boxed lunches. I did this in the day and at
night I went to a public night school. My contract with Shau Nu Duei was for
2 years, after 2 years the contract was not continued. But I was lucky
because a movie company asked me to act in movies. When I was asked whether
I wanted to work in Japan, I agreed immediately. Japan was a country that
I've dreamed about for a long time. Even though I knew it would be hard to
work in Japan, the hardships also became part of my strength so I had
courage to move forward..."
"In the first year I only appeared
in magazines. In the second year, I sometimes appeared on late night TV
shows. I released 3 singles and 1 album, but not many were sold. When I
missed home I'd call Taiwan and start crying when I hear my mother's voice.
However, I never gave up. Going back to Taiwan would be an escape, something
that I couldn't do. Finally in the 3rd year everything got better, I became
a regular on a popular TV show Urinari. I am truly grateful for this show.
At that time my Japanese was horrible, but everyone helped me. Later a plan
for Black Biscuit was created. In a moment I became an idol! Not only that,
I was fortunate enough to be on a respected show like "Red and White."
Finally a day came when everyone knows whom Vivian Hsu is... In April of
1999 I bought a house for my mother so we would never worry about paying
rent again.
It has been 9 years since I first
worked in entertainment at age 15. Time passed by so quickly, sometimes I
feel everything only happened yesterday.
Note by the Webmistress: According
to Vivian-fan Keiji, expert in all things Vivian Hsu, "Vivian
must be dating her arrival in Japan from mid-1994 because the magazines were
1995 and the Urinani work started in late spring 1996 and she was a regular
by September of that year."
